Academic Complexity: A Sketch of Next University

The university is a place which has amassed an enormous amount of knowledge. In natural, social, medical sciences, legal sciences, literary studies, and the arts there is nothing which has not been studied, even though everything still needs to be known. And yet, the university is a place of fear. Bright students fear to lose their time studying past knowledge barely prepared to account for future questions. Experienced teachers fear to have focused on theories and methods successful in the past yet helpless to lead society out of its current lock-ins regarding problems of globalisation, digitisation, and climate change. Administrators still somehow in love with an institution they try to adapt to global change fear that a university is to be changed only by almost completely turning their back to its splendid past as a place of critical inquiry, skeptical thinking, and relentless objection.
